Cincinnati Bengals No-huddle Offense

The Cincinnati Bengals applied a lot pressure to the opposing teams defense in 1988 when head coach Sam Wyche and offensive coordinator Bruce Coslet implemented the no-huddle as their base offense. The no huddle offense before this point was only used during moments of the game when time was running low on the game clock, which is usually toward the end of a particular quarter of at the end of the game when the offense is trailing and need to score quickly to have chance at winning the game. Running the no-huddle offense at all time of the game made it not only difficult to adjust to the offensive the scheme, but it also made it challenging for the defense to substitute layers as they are fatiguing. The NFL was forced to input rules that would benefit the defensive team and allow them to regrouping for tactical and substitution purposes.

West Coast Offense

Bill Walsh formulated what is now known as the “West Coast Offense” during his time as an assistant coach with the Bengals from 1968 to 1975. The west coast offense is considered a high percentage passing scheme and is now a main part of most NFL team’s offense in today’s game.

Zone Blitz

The defense that was formulated to combat the “west coast offense” was also created by the Cincinnati Bengals, by coach Dick LeBeau who served as a defensive coordinator for the Bengals and later became the head coach from 2000-2002.
